Athlete and Team
Performance Training
GRIT Pilates & Yoga brings a strength-first, coach-led approach to athlete training Grand Rapids players, teams, students, and active adults can use to move with more control. This is not soft stretching. It is focused work for core strength, rotation, balance, agility, endurance, mobility, power, and body awareness.
Athletes from Grand Rapids, Cascade, Ada, Forest Hills, and the 28th St SE corridor come to GRIT for training that connects reformer Pilates, functional movement, pad work, kettlebells, jumpboard drills, and conditioning. If you are a coach, parent, student athlete, golfer, pickleball player, soccer player, football player, tennis player, baseball player, swimmer, basketball player, runner, fighter, or active adult, start here.

Pilates for Athletes With a Strength-First Edge
Pilates for athletes at GRIT is built around control under tension. The reformer challenges athletes to stabilize, resist, rotate, press, pull, and coordinate movement instead of only chasing heavier loads or faster reps.
Athletic performance depends on more than one muscle group. GRIT training emphasizes:
Core control through the trunk, hips, feet, and shoulders
Balance and coordination in multiple planes of motion
Mobility that supports stronger, cleaner movement
Breath and body awareness during effort
Functional strength for sport-specific positions
Low-impact training options that still demand real work
The goal is not to replace a sport coach, strength coach, or medical provider. The goal is to add a smarter movement layer that helps athletes understand how their body creates force, controls force, and recovers from repeated demands.
Student and Athlete Training
GRIT works with high school athletes, college athletes, graduates, developing athletes, and active adults. Student pricing can support both high school and college students, and athlete work can also happen through personal training appointments.
Explosive Edge
Explosive Edge is designed for students and athletes who need speed, power, mobility, core strength, agility, balance, and overall body control. Sessions can include A-skips and B-skips on the jumpboard so athletes can practice speed mechanics with less ground impact, plus kettlebells and basic reformer work to teach mind-body connection.
Pad Training and Conditioning
Pad training and conditioning is available by appointment through personal training. Sessions may include boxing pad work, metabolic conditioning, hand-eye coordination, footwork, agility, kettlebells, weightlifting, reformer work, and focus.
Team Training Grand Rapids Programs
Teams can book private sessions at GRIT. Private team sessions are useful for coaches, parents, captains, schools, clubs, and small performance groups that want a coach-led session built around strength, control, balance, rotation, and conditioning.
Pilates for athletes at GRIT is built around control under tension. The reformer challenges athletes to stabilize, resist, rotate, press, pull, and coordinate movement instead of only chasing heavier loads or faster reps.
For a more individualized path, athletes can use Private Training & Personal Coaching for one-on-one support, duet sessions, or focused personal training.
Core Training for Athletes
Core training for athletes is not just sit-ups or planks. At GRIT, the core is trained as part of the full system: feet, ankles, hips, ribs, spine, shoulders, breath, and extremities working together.
A strong core helps athletes control position while they sprint, swing, cut, throw, kick, jump, rotate, brace, and decelerate. Reformer Pilates can expose weaknesses that traditional weight training may not reveal because the machine challenges alignment, resistance, tempo, and control at the same time.
Athlete sessions may include reformer-based strength, mat core exercises, kettlebell conditioning, jumpboard-style power work, resistance bands, pad work, and functional push, pull, squat, hinge, carry, and rotation patterns.
Sports Performance Training Grand Rapids Athletes Can Add to Their Week
Sports performance training Grand Rapids athletes choose should fit the demands of the sport, not copy a random workout. GRIT is especially useful when an athlete needs a supplement to team practice, lifting, and conditioning.
You may be a good fit if you want to add low-impact strength without skipping intensity, improve control through the hips and shoulders, train balance under resistance, build better awareness of breath and bracing, work on rotation and mobility, or book a coach-led team session.
Athletes who need help with fueling, protein, recovery habits, or body composition education can explore Nutrition & Wellness Coaching.
Rotational Power Training
Rotational power training matters for golfers, pickleball players, tennis players, baseball players, softball players, quarterbacks, soccer players, swimmers, and fighters. Rotation is not only about turning harder. It is about controlling the feet, hips, trunk, shoulders, breath, and timing so force can move through the body without wasted effort.
GRIT uses Pilates and functional training principles to help athletes feel where power starts, where it leaks, and how to control the body through the full range of motion. The work is sport-aware without pretending every athlete needs the same program.
Movement Quality, Strength, and Resilience
Training cannot guarantee that an athlete will avoid injury, and GRIT does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. What GRIT can do is coach movement quality, core strength, mobility, balance, control, breath, and body awareness.
These are practical foundations for athletes who want stronger movement patterns and better awareness of compensation. Athletes returning from injury, managing pain, or under medical care should follow the guidance of the appropriate healthcare provider before starting or changing training.
